| 1. How a TCM diagnosis is made? |
| Diagnostic information of TCM is gathered mainly through four examinations – Looking; Listening, Asking; and Touching. The most important examinations are tongue examination and wrist pulses examination. Different texture, color and coating of tongue and various rhythms of pulse can be identified by experienced Chinese doctors to tell the internal conditions.

3. Is acupuncture painful? |
Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to needles used in blood tests and injections. They are much finer, and are solid rather than hollow. Most people find acupuncture a pleasant and deeply relaxing experience. There should be no pain during the insertion of needles if the doctor is fully trained and experienced. When the practitioner carefully inserts the needles, you may feel a slight tingling sensation. This indicates that the treatment is beginning to have some effect. Sometimes you may feel numbness at the point of entry or an energy transfer along the meridian to another part of the body. Needles are inserted either for a second or two, or left in place for up to 20 minutes, depending on the effect required.
After acupuncture, you will feel relaxed or even slightly sleepy, so please take care not to tackle anything strenuous for a few hours following your treatment. The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition: many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, better appetite and sleep, as well as an enhanced sense of overall well being.

4. Have herbs been processed before use by patients? |
Yes. Chinese Herbs have been processed before use.
Why? First of all, the processing can reduce any possible side effects of herbs by detoxifying the herbs. The second reason for processing herbs is for filtering out impurities such as dirt and sand. Another reason is the processing can soften the strong taste or smell of herbs. Finally, it is very important to address that processing herbs can enhance their functions.

5. Can you tell me the difference between Chinese patent and prescribed herbs? |
Chinese Patent herbs are premixed herb combinations according to the traditional formulas developed by experts in traditional Chinese medicine through over 3000 years. They are similar to over-the-counter-drugs and usually in the form of pill, capsule and liquid. The advantages of Chinese patent herbs are convenient, ease to take, less expensive. However, patient's symptoms must fit the patent herb's narrow indications.
Prescribed herbs are mixed by a herbalist according to an individual patient's symptoms and diagnoses. In general speaking, prescribed herbs are more effective than patent herbs because the prescribed herbs are tailored to your symptoms and conditions exclusively by your herbalist if he or she is very good at traditional Chinese medicine.

 |
6. Can I buy Chinese patent herbs directly? |
Although Chinese patent herbs are relative safe and have less side-effect, I do not recommend you buy Chinese patent herbs from herb store or other channels without obtaining advice from a certified herbalist.
 |
 |
7. Why Chinese herbs are always mixed in formula to use? |
|
Chinese herbalists usually do not prescribe single herb for their patients. Chinese herbs usually are used in combinations of 8 to 18 herbs. There are three major reasons to support the combination practice. Mutual Reinforcement involves combining two or more very similar herbs together to create a stronger effect. Mutual Assistance is the way to use one herb to help another work better. Mutual Restraint is meant to use one herb to reduce or eliminate side effects of another herb in the combination.
All of these demonstrate that a herbalist should be experienced and knowledgeable about herbs before attempting to combine them. Otherwise, Mutual Inhibition occurs when one herb reduces another's Effectiveness; Incompatibility occurs when the combination of certain herbs produces side effects or becomes poisonous.

8. Could you offer me some precautions while I take herbs? |
Like anything else you put in your body, you should be taken a certain amount of caution when you take Chinese herbs. For instance, some herbs are too strong for pregnant women and may cause miscarriage. Certain foods can have adverse effects on the herbal therapy. In general speaking, when taking Chinese herbs, one should avoid food that is raw (fruit is okay, but vegetables should be cooked), greasy, strong tasting or smelling, difficult to digest (such as beef), or irritating to the digestive system (like spicy foods). It is always a good idea to get advice from a herbalist before you take Chinese herbs.

12. What if I do not like the taste of your herbal tea? |
It is true that our one-to-one herbal tea does not taste nice. Not only this herbal tea can also smell very strong. Almost nobody would really enjoy having it. But what you want is to get rid of your problem. In order to help you, we cannot just give you what you like. In stead we must give you what works for your particular problem. Depending on the formula of the tea (ingredients in your prescription), most of the herbal tea taste quite bitter, but not all of them, some do taste nice. All in all, it is generally accepted that the effects of the medicine far outweigh the sometimes bitter taste.
To be able to get used to its taste, first of all, you should drink it slightly warm quickly and rinse your mouth with small amount of water or juice when you finish. Secondly if you really feel sick or tend to vomit after taking the tea, you should drink less each time for more times than normal. Even though you should finish your daily dose as advised. Remember, Do Not add sugar or honey before you are instructed to do so.

13. What is the main difference between Chinese medicine and Western
medicine? |
Chinese medicine treats the cause of the disorder, and Western medicine the symptom of the disorder. For example, two people may have the same symptoms of eczema, but the cause of the complaint may be completely different: one patient may have an imbalance of his or her liver, the other an imbalance of his or her spleen. A Western doctor may prescribe the same medicine for the ailment, but the Chinese doctor will treat the underlying cause of eczema and in this case, one patient will be treated for a liver imbalance and the other for a spleen imbalance.

14. What will happen on my first visit? |
Your first consultation may be longer than subsequent sessions. The acupuncturist needs to assess your general state of health in order to identify the underlying pattern of disharmony and give you the most effective treatment. You will be asked about your current symptoms and what treatment you have received so far. You will also be asked about your medical history and that of your close family. The practitioner will also ask you about your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and your general emotional state.
To discover how the energies are flowing in your body, the acupuncturist is likely to feel your pulse, noting the quality, rhythm and strength. The structure, color and coating of your tongue also gives a good guide to physical health.
Once enough information has been gathered to determine the likely causes of your problems, the acupuncturist can select the appropriate treatment. The aim is to discover which energy channels need adjusting for your specific complaint to improve, and which require treatment to boost your overall energy and vitality.

15. Does TCM conflict with conventional Western medicine? |
No. TCM can be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic disease as they are based on different system of philosophy. No matter it is acupuncture of herbal remedy, they are natural approach to solve health problems. There is no adverse effect against western medicine that you probably have already been on. As with any treatment, it may be important to mention certain details about your current state of health, as this will assist the practitioner in his full diagnosis of your condition.

 |
16. What should I do before acupuncture treatment ? |
You must not have empty stomach before having acupuncture. However, try not to have a big meal within a hour of your appointment as the process of digestion will alter the pattern of your pulse.
Also avoid alcohol and food and drinks which alter the color of your tongue just before you have your consultation.
 |
 |
17. How long will I need treatment? |
Chronic cases can take many years to develop, and it is therefore likely that they will also take quite sometime to respond to treatment and start improving. It is important to allow the treatment time to take effect rather than to expect an instant "miracle cure". The total number of treatments will vary from patient to patient, and your practitioner will discuss your own specific case with you.
